A project started from humble beginnings and the need to make a change. As the owner of Just Invest I, John Troskie, believe we need to be thinking of their future and ours. I hope that the efforts we currently put forth for Rhino conservation can one day lead to the much-needed land and habitat that these animals require.

Run Wild for Rhinos is a conservation consciousness movement. We drive conservation initiatives through doing ultra-distance running expeditions and use it as a platform to educate, inform and make people aware of the very real crisis our rhinos are facing. The general public have what we refer to as rhino poaching fatigue, people are selectively deaf to the issue so we are pioneering new, exciting and innovative ways to get into the public’s hearts and minds and we put a more positive angle on conservation and show ordinary people that they are able to make an extraordinary difference with the talent and resources they have at their disposal.

We are however 100% committed to rhino conservation and support various credible rhino conservation and anti-poaching organisations.

For me personally, I am quite obsessed with saving rhinos. Once you’ve looked into the eyes of a rhino, touched a rhino, heard it breathe, felt it’s heartbeat, there is no way on earth that you will not fall in love with these gentle giants. Rhinos are not just another animal, like elephants they are sentient beings with complex social structures and very strong family bonds. We as humans underestimate the ability of animals to feel and the trauma that is caused to young calves when their moms are poached is devastating. Therefor I will dedicate the rest of my live to help save rhinos.

Why save Rhinos?

Rhinos are fast disappearing from the wild. Without urgent, international action they could be gone within a generation. According to the authorities we have around 27 000 rhinos left in the wild, according to our estimations and that of those who work very closely in conservation that number is closer to 12 000. Therefor the very urgent need to save them.

The two African rhino species – black rhino and white rhino – are at risk due to a huge surge in poaching to meet demand for illegal rhino horn, primarily in Asia. Countries and conservationists are stepping up their efforts but record numbers of rhinos are currently being killed.

At this point I want to reiterate the fact that rhino horn is just keratin, the same substance our hair and nails consist of. It has no magical or healing properties and no-one needs rhino horn except a rhino!

Rhinos are keystone species and have been around for hundreds of thousands of years and play a crucial role in their ecosystem. They’re important grazers, consuming large amounts of vegetation, which helps shape the African landscape. This benefits other animals and keeps a healthy balance within the ecosystem. If they were to disappear from earth, many things will be altered forever in the ecosystem which again contributes to a myriad of other problems.

As one of Africa’s ‘big five’, rhinos are a popular sight for tourists. Ecotourism can be an important source of income for local people and is a largely untapped source of sustainable income. By protecting our rhinos, we’re helping to conserve their habitat for the benefit of people and wildlife, helping support local communities and making sure natural resources are available for generations to come.

If we cannot save and protect our rhinos, what can we protect? What will be next?

Yours in conservation and adventures

South Africa is the most unequal country in the world. Sport has the power to change this.

We use the vehicle of sport to activate generosity within a community by facilitating opportunities for individuals and teams to play for a greater purpose.

*Why we believe Change is Possible:*

We are about authentic change:

Sport for Lives focuses on mentorship on and off the field, facilitating mindset and heart shifts to influence the perspective of the youth as they change the future of inequality in South Africa.

We are about generosity:

Sport for Lives creates a platform for individual and school communities to adopt a culture of generosity.

We value family:

Sport for Lives provides opportunities for families, who are the most effective catalysts of change, to impact their surrounding  communities.

We are about the individual:

Poverty and inequality can be so disabling because it’s hard for an individual to know how to serve those around them. Sport for Lives empowers the individual to serve their communities in a meaningful way as part of everyday life.

We are relevant:

The Non-Profit sector in South Africa is actively addressing the challenges we face as a country. The needs that these organisations meet, daily, have increased significantly during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic. Sport for Lives, through activating generosity, can alleviate this increased financial burden so that the work can continue to be carried out effectively.

We are stream-lined:

Every week, around the country, thousands of sports’ matches are played. We simply create opportunities for sports teams to set up campaigns and for stakeholders, represented by the team, to pledge an amount of money per try/goal/hoop/km/lap/birdie. 90% of the funds raised are given to their designated Non-Profit Partner whilst 10% goes to our administration costs.

We are non-threatening:

Sport has always been a great unifier. Sport for Lives creates a non-threatening context for communities to engage with socio-economic challenges through playing and supporting sport.
