Thandi, a female white rhino, along with two male white rhinos were poached for their horns in 2012.

Sadly, one male rhino did not survive the night, but Thandi and Themba were discovered and the fight was on to keep them alive.

It took huge effort on the part of the local team to maintain the two rhinos’ health.

But tragically, Themba passed away within a few weeks.

Thandi, however, was showing significant improvement. She underwent a number of surgeries over the following year and after her final facial procedure the unbelievable happened: blood tests revealed that she was pregnant!

What amazing news! Having survived such a brutal attack and now going to become a mother and contribute to the conservation of this remarkable species…

A 16-month gestation period later, Thandi gave birth to Thembi, a female calf.

Now, fast forward to today, and Thandi is the proud mother of not one, but four calves – Thembi, Colin, Mthetho and Siya, the newest addition to the family.

But this isn’t the end of the good news… Thandi’s firstborn, Thembi, has now also given birth to a calf of her own!
